Xarelto’s active ingredient is rivaroxaban (pronounced, Riv a Rox a ban). The drug is also composed of other inactive ingredients including hypromellose, lactose monohydrate, magnesium stearate, croscarmellose sodium, sodium lauryl sulfate and microcrystalline cellulose. So far, there is no generic form of this drug sold in the U.S market.

Xarelto is generally used to treat deep vein thrombosis, a serious blood clotting condition which could potentially lead to pulmonary embolism or the sudden blockage of major blood arteries in the lungs. Xarelto is also used for patients who have heart rhythm disorders to lower the risk of stroke which is caused by blood clotting.

Unfortunately, the likelihood of severe hemorrhage as a side effect from taking Xarelto is common. Hemorrhage is not just the common Xarelto adverse effects as liver dysfunction and abnormal blood clotting in organs were also cited by clinical studies on patients who used the drug. Xarelto can also be associated with indigestion, muscle spams, backache, urinary tract infection and abdominal pain. Studies also cited that Xarelto has some rare side effects including giant hives, hepatitis, abdominal bleeding and Steven-Johnson syndrome.

Despite the challenges of the FDA against Johnson and Johnson, the manufacturer still continues to promote the drug as safe and effective. J&J’s request for the FDA to approve Xarelto’s expanded uses have been declined three times.

Johnson & Johnsons wants to promote the drug for treating a certain condition based on a clinical conclusion from a study called ANCHOR. This specific usage might still be unapproved, but the company stated that doctors are already using it for cases associated with that study.

Xarelto belongs to a drug class known as Factor Xa inhibitors. Its side effects heighten if the drug is taken with other anticoagulant drugs. It is very necessary to talk to your doctor before using Xarelto and it shouldn’t be self-administered. Before using the drug, inform your doctor if you have; kidney or liver problem, another medical condition, has bleeding problems or is pregnant or wanting to become pregnant.
